Chubaev has attended the 13th Saint Petersburg Art school, the State Russian Museum Student Club Lectorium and the Press Photography Faculty. Graduated from the Peter the Great
St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in 2021 and started the ITMO University Art & Science Master's degree. Currently he is living and working in his hometown.
By the 2018 intensive work on installations opened new horizons in still life. The idea of constructing an image from colourful spots using physical objects is represented in Joy, awarded by SWPA, and my first magazine cover. Impact of European art institutions and cultural heritage I was in touch with, helped me to form my aesthetic preferences while the native culture affected the choice of subjects and its' creating manner. "The jury has chosen Stepan Chubaev's project Andromeda Syndrome for its creative yet sensitive approach to the portrayal of a challenging subject created in bold visual language" — that what was stated at the 2019 Copenhagen Photo Festival, which was one of the most significant representations abroad.
In 2019, after Copenhagen I was invited to judge the FIBA photo competition in Geneva. In autumn 2019 I was invited to the Photo Vogue Festival portfolio review again where I presented my first self-published portfolio book. The album includes complete Andromeda Syndrome series, the Ultima Thule chapter with still lifes and digital manipulation, and the Miracle Oracle drafts. Participation in the Russian State Museum 5th Biennale of Contemporary Photography was the last step to get into the Top 100 Young Russian Artists InArt rating in 2019.
Since 2020, with the help of the Syndikat Artists agency, Andromeda Syndrome was published in the Page magazine and became its cover in 2021. After the June 2019 auction sales by Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen, the Andromeda Syndrome was consigned again in January 2021. The November photography auction by Dorotheum took Andromeda Syndrome to Vienna. The recent series are represented in Space and Colour Study, Bloom and Memories, one image from which was published in Der Greif issue 14.
